Graham Foulds and Toby Boyes represented the coaching team of ‘Richardson’s CC Scarborough’ at Filey School on Thursday the 13th of August. Both received a warm welcome on arrival with bright blue skies and a cool summer sea breeze. The waiting riders consisted of six boys and three girls with ages ranging from 7 to 11 years old, and on a variety of different bikes.
The day was split into morning and afternoon sessions of 2 hours each. During the morning the riders went through some basics skills consisting of mounting/dismounting, pedalling, braking, and balance and co-ordination using a series of entertaining exercises from the British Cycling ‘Go Ride’ gears books.
After breaking for lunch the group resumed with some more advanced techniques on gear selection, cornering and then moved onto the grass banks within the school grounds to practice some uphill and downhill slaloms using techniques we had touched on during the morning sessions, finishing with a ‘funnel’ race.
A great time was had by all, even if one of the coaches came away looking like ‘Darth Maul’ from Star Wars because he forgot to take his sun cream!
Toby Boyes and Graham Foulds are currently training to become level 2 British Cycling Coaches. Their training has been funded through the local Filey and Scarborough Sports Partnership.
