On Saturday 7th November 2009 Richardsons Cycle Club received an invite to attend Richard Dunns Sport Centre in Bradford to meet Simon Watt the Olympic Development Coach with British Cycling. The day was a coaching development session for our coaches and also a chance for our young road riders to be involved in a 2 hour coached session.
Club Coach Mark Grange and 14 year old road rider Matt Schofield travelled to Bradford. The coaching session involved coaches riding with the young riders on the closed tarmac circuit whilst some observed from the side. Around 30-40 young riders turned up from all over Yorkshire many well experienced but most fairly new to the sport.
The day was well structured with Simon in his GB National kit describing in detail each element of the session. All elements were progressive with riders moving from two abreast to three abreast then getting riders to move from the back of the field through the middle of the group. There were three crashes during the session but no one was hurt as the speed was kept low by the coaches riding with the groups. The day ended with several short races.
All coaches and riders were then invited inside the Sports Centre to learn about the Olympic Development Programme and how ‘Go Ride’ clubs like ours are essential to identifying and supporting young riders onto the programme.
Our Youth Academy which runs every Sunday is an ideal venue for young riders to learn cycling skills and meet other young riders in the area. RCC are to extend the amount of coaches we have in 2010.
