RCC King of Speed series update

Updated 4th June

I’m changing the way the ‘best improver’ competition works a little. Given that we’re often getting fewer than 10 riders per event, having points from 1 to 10 for each improver event will provide slightly skewed results - someone could improve brilliantly and someone else might get only a point or two less by improving at all.

So I’m going to use the same basic format (as below) but it will be based on absolute improvements in speed. The gains (or losses) will still be worked out like this:

1. 2nd 5-mile TT speed minus 1st 5-mile TT speed.

2. 2nd 10-mile TT speed minus 1st 10-mile TT speed.

3. 3rd 5-mile TT speed minus (average of 1st and 2nd 5-mile TT speeds).

4. 3rd 10-mile TT speed minus (average of 1st and 2nd 10-mile TT speeds).

The result of this change should mean that the person who improves most wins, which was the original intention.

Update: 2nd May

I’ve put some PDFs on the site (see below) with all the details you need for each event: where to meet, where we start and finish, where the route goes, and so on.

As you may know, the object of these races is to achieve the highest speed at 5, 10 and 25 miles. Your best speed at each distance will then be averaged out, and the rider with the fastest speed at the end wins. Hence, King of Speed. There will be a trophy, plus runner up shield, for: Fastest Man, Fastest Woman, and Fastest Junior (NB. only 5 and 10 mile events will be counted for juniors - though they can ride the 25-mile events.) You’ll need to do at least one ride at each qualifying distance to take part in the overall competitions (e.g. one 5, one 10 and one 25), though you’ve got better odds if you do more rides.

Non-club members can take part in this series but can’t win trophies. However, there will be some kind of award (not sure what - possibly a cycling shoe sprayed gold) for the best average speed by a non-club member.

Right, that’s for the fast people. What if you’re not so fast? Don’t worry. There will also be a trophy and runner up shield for the Best Improver in the series. This will be based solely on your performances in the 5 and 10 mile events. Points will be award for the biggest speed gains, in absolute terms, from your performances at the different distances. The top 10 gains will get points, from 10 down to 1.

Here’s how the gains will be worked out:

1. 2nd 5-mile TT speed minus 1st 5-mile TT speed.

2. 2nd 10-mile TT speed minus 1st 10-mile TT speed.

3. 3rd 5-mile TT speed minus (average of 1st and 2nd 5-mile TT speeds).

4. 3rd 10-mile TT speed minus (average of 1st and 2nd 10-mile TT speeds).

It’s less complicated than it looks: basically, the person who consistently improves most will win. You can pick up points just by doing two 5-mile TTs or two 10-mile TTs, but you’ve got better odds if you do 3 x 5TTs and 3 x 10TTs. This competition could be won by anybody but is more likely to be won be a relative beginner. Physics means that it’s much easier to go from 18 to 20mph than it is to go from 25 to 27mph.

Of course, you can just turn up and do one or two events too and ignore the overall competitions. But if you do more than two events, you’ll automatically qualify for one or both of: King of Speed or Best Improver.

If you’ve never done a time trial before, have a look at this.

Previous update

In one week the Richardsons CC ‘KIng of Speed’ time trial series starts. This is a 9-event series with rides at 5, 10 and 25 miles. The objective is to record your highest average speed over these three distances - your best race at each distance will count. (NB. Under 18s are welcome to ride the 25 mile TTs but only their 5 and 10 mile distances will count for their competition.)

All races start at 7.15pm and will cost £2 per rider to enter. Any local time triallist can take part, and all RCC members are eligible for prizes and trophies. The events are registered with Cycling Time Trials and with the police. But we need one more thing for them to take place: volunteers!

I (Dan Joyce) will be sorting the signage, results, etc. But each event needs a minimum of two volunteers to take place - a timekeeper and a time keeper’s assistant. Three would be better, so that we’ve got a marshall for at least one junction and will be essential for the 5-mile events if we get more than about a dozen riders.

Volunteering just means means turning up on a Monday evening for an hour or two and wearing a bright yellow bib that says ‘marshall’. You’ll either be looking at a stopwatch, calling out rider numbers as they come in, or holding out one arm to direct riders. One volunteer at each race will hold up riders at the start (i.e. hold their bike as they wait stationary, feet clipped in). All of these jobs are very easy. What’s more, all of the events are LOCAL. You won’t need to travel more than five or six miles from the centre of Scarborough, so you could cycle out.

Volunteers will need to be there from about 6.45 (at the very latest) up until the race finishes - which will vary from around 7.45 or so for the 5-mile races up to about 8.30-8.45 for the 25s. If you’ve never done any kind of timekeeping or marshalling before, instruction will take about five minutes. As I say, it’s easy. But someone still has to do it.

I’ll be timekeeping at some of the events. But I’ll need help. Can you let me know if you, or anyone you know (e.g. family who would be happy to see you race), would be happy to help out on the dates below? If you can help, let me know all the dates you’re available to help. I’ll assume you want to help on just one occasion unless you specifically tell me you’re happy to help e.g. two or three times. I’ll draw up a list when I know what kind of volunteer pool we’ve got. You can email me or send me a private message via this website.

I’m hoping to be able to sort this using volunteers alone. If I can’t, I’ll make it a condition of entry that to qualify for the series you’ll need to volunteer (or bring a proxy volunteer) to help at at least one event.

These are the dates, with the race distances, course numbers (don’t worry about these) and details of roughly where we’ll meet. (More details nearer the time.)

10th May, 5 miles, V401 - meet nr. Morrisons

17th May, 10 miles, V417 - meet nr. Musham Bank roundabout

24th May, 25 miles, V430 - meet layby near Seamer on Ayton-Seamer road

7th June, 5 miles, V401 - meet nr. Morrisons

14th June, 10 miles, V417 - meet nr. Musham Bank roundabout

21st June, 25 miles, V430 - meet layby near Seamer on Ayton-Seamer road

28th June, 5 miles, V401 - meet nr. Morrisons

5th July, 10 miles, V417 - meet nr. Musham Bank roundabout

12th July, 25 miles, V430 - meet layby near Seamer on Ayton-Seamer road

I’ll be at all of them - hopefully racing some of them.

I can help out on the 10 may and 5 july

  3. Rex Rixon says:

Do we need to sign on Dan before the event or just turn up with our dollars. Rex

  4. Dan Joyce says:

Rex: just turn up with a roadworthy bike and £2. No need to pre-enter.

  5. Rex Rixon says:

Thanks Dan I enjoyed the 5 Miles, this was my second one only, I wish some of you other riders would join in, its really is good fun. It all looks a bit daunting at first especially when you see some fab bikes and very fit looking riders, but if an old plodder like me can have go so can you. See you all there on the next one. Rex.

  6. matthew says:

Will try to get there for the 10.
    See you soon.
    Maffers.
