King of Speed 6 results

A sunny but slightly breezy evening saw eight riders face timekeepers Toby Boyes and strangely suntanned Tom Stockill on Monday evening. The line up included Mark Grange, who had been racing Mountain Mayhem just yesterday; David Schubert, riding his first 25; and Malton Wheelers comeback rider Nick Hatton, who hadn’t ridden the course before so had taken the sensible step of sellotaping maps onto his aero handlebars.

There were no surprises with the overall victory: Dave Thompson had another good ride. Mark Grange blew up half way round but still managed to come second ahead of an in-form Barrie Cappleman. Ride of the night, however, went to fourth placed Jeff Francis, who knocked around five minutes off his personal best for this distance. I (Dan) ran out of gas halfway round the course like Mark, without the excuse of having done Mayhem this weekend. Nick Hatton got distracted by a random cyclist on a roundabout and despite his maps went off course and into a housing estate. He lost at least a minute, maybe more, before he got back on the course - confusing all the riders who set off after him, who by then had overtaken him without actually seeing him. Jimmy Morrsion (who is 69!) did a good ride, while David Schubert came very close to the benchmark 20mph average for his first attempt at this distance.
