Richardsons CC Track Session – Sunday 19^th February 2012

We have managed to secure another 2 hour track session at the Manchester Velodrome on Sunday 19^th of February, 3 till 5pm. This is our fourth trip to the velodrome and it is always a fantastic experience as those members that have been before will acknowledge. If you haven’t been before I urge you to come along and have a go. It is quite a daunting prospect to ride a bike that has no brakes, no freewheel and ride on a wooden track with very steep banking, but it is extremely exhilarating and will give you an insight into what our Olympic Cycling Champions put themselves through. Don’t be put off though, my 10 year old niece has ridden the track with her Dad (my brother, who will be coaching us) and she is now addicted!

The cost of the trip will depend on how many people attend. The hire fee for the track is £200 and this will be split between the number of riders on the day. Unless you have your own track bike you will need to hire a bike at a cost of £10.50, or £8.00 if you are under 16, for the duration of the session. This fee includes the hire of a helmet if required (according to the Velodrome website). The track bikes have ‘Look Delta’ pedals so if you have shoes with Look Delta cleats you can bring your own shoes, otherwise you are advised to hire shoes at the velodrome. The cost of shoe hire is £4.50. Pedal adaptors are available for younger riders so that they can ride in ‘clean’ trainers. The only other costs involved will be a collection for the coach as he is giving his time for free and the transport to and from the velodrome. This will be arranged nearer the time and will involve car sharing to keep the cost to a minimum.

This session is open to all club members, and we hope to get a good representation from the Youth Academy. The only restrictions are that the smallest hire bikes have a frame size of 15.5 (39) and the Velodrome website advises that riders should be aged between 9 and 80 years old! If we get a lot of younger riders we may need to use an additional coach which may increase the cost slightly.

Track sessions are very hard to secure and we have been very lucky to get another so please come along and support your club. The more we use it, the better our chances of getting future track time.

As well as being able to drink beer, seeing as it’s a pub, you can hear about what the club is planning for 2012, stand for the committee (optional, but volunteers always welcome!) and maybe win something in the raffle. Plus you can vote for the club trophies, which will be awarded at the club dinner on 25 February.

The session will be road specific and take place at Mallory Park in Leicestershire on the Thursday 16 February. The session is for established Regional Schools of Racing riders, as well as giving riders who are first year under 14 (not yet of the age to attend Regional Schools of Racing) the opportunity to have a taste of the discipline, skill and endurance levels required in the future.

This is a Talent Program session and the Talent programme in its two tier form is in place to cater for riders only with the birth years listed below. For 2012, we are going to have a maximum of 120 subscriptions that will be chosen from applications received.

With your application you must have a valid email address so we can forward information and be able to prove:

• You are birth years 1996, 1997, 1998 or 1999
• Regularly racing at a regional and or national level.
• Evidence of participation in Go-Ride club or holiday scheme or BC or British Triathlon GROUP coaching sessions.

The reason for the criteria is that over the last few years we have had increasing numbers of riders who are complete novice attending sessions. Dropping these riders into sessions as technically testing as this and at the speeds we run the sessions at, has caused safety issues for those riders and the riders around them. It has also been a very negative experience for those young riders who are just buying into our mega sport. Our main objective is to create a real fun learning experience which does not de-motivate or injure our young cyclists.

For this event you will need road bikes only with no tri bars please.  If you feel this rules you out of the NSR, we advocate that you should be looking to take part in some local club activity or Go-Ride Racing and holiday club sessions and then move on to some low level regional racing. Together with our Go-Ride colleagues, we can steer you in the right direction. You can find a list of your regional go-ride team here - Regional Development Staff.

Applications need to be emailed to Anneliese Heard by Monday 23 January at annelieseheard@britishcycling.org.uk. From this, you will receive a parental consent form, session details and information about online entry. Please call on 07515 606 629 if you have any questions.

If you are a qualified coach and wish to assist us on the day, there are a number of logistical roles we need help with, please can you contact Anneliese Heard on the above email address by Wednesday 8 February. Coaches will then be given a role for the day on or off the bike and will be forwarded session plans.

All riders will be getting TEF/Richardsons RT kit, fleeces and Polo shirts.  Thanks to an increase in our budget for 2012 from TEF Transport we have extended the financial support to our riders with target race entries and some expenses paid for.

The new team has met for two training dates so far and the next date for the Team to meet is Sunday 22nd Jan 2012 for bike fit, target races for 2012 and training.      February will see the team away for a free weekend in the Yorkshire Dales for some high volume training around Keld and Richmond.

Once again thanks to Richardsons Cycles and TEF Transport for their support in 2012.

Pedal off the pudding, burn off the beer and sweat off the sprouts

A social ride in Christmas fancy dress will set off from the Visitor’s Centre in Low Dalby on Tuesday 27^th December.

Ready to ride at 9.30am and back to the visitor’s centre 2 hours later for coffee and cake.

The ride will go ahead whatever the weather, as long as Dalby Forest Drive stays open.

Having been to Majorca for a number of years the RCC training camp/cycling trip will be heading to Riccione, Italy in 2012. The trip will be from Wednesday 11^th to Wednesday 18^th April. We will be staying at the Fedora Hotel in Riccione.

Accommodation will be on a half board basis. However, sandwiches, bananas and energy powders are provided for the rides. On return from your ride, an afternoon buffet is provided with pasta, salad, fresh fruits and cakes – this is in addition to your evening meal where water and wine is included in the price. (Possibility of weight gain rather than weight loss on this trip!) There are four daily rides each day with expert cycling guides and as usual different cycling abilities are catered for. In addition to all of this the hotel provides a free daily laundry service for bike clothes and there is a free transfer from Rimini airport to the hotel.

If you wish to take your own bikes the hotel has a safe storage area along with a mechanical workshop and washing spot. However, if you fancy making life easier you can rent a bike. Please let me know if you would like further info re this.

I have negotiated a special deal for our club as we will also have use of the Hotel’s Wellness and Fitness area. The price per person per day in a double room with all services above included is 47 € for RCC club members and 50 € per day for non-RCC members. For single occupancy this would be 62 € RCC/65 € non-RCC.

Initial bike checks done and one flat tyre and back brake altered, we set off loaded with suitable chocolate bars and drinks.   The ride started on the road to Granary Farm and then a short ride to the first single track.  It was not long before the flat tyre from the bike check on Reubens bike was back and it was confirmed as a puncture.  While this was being sorted the riders practicsed some front wheel lifts and Paul Thornton showed us the over energetic version with more force than finesse which was also repeated by Bryden who nearly left the forest track with a sideways tracking wheelie!

It was not long before we were off again and we hit a small rooted and rutted section which was covered really well by Reuben, Bailey and Jasper its great to see some really good bike handling at such a young age.      The ride went onto a large forest track which was covered by puddles and channels of deep mud which crossed the track at 90 degrees.   Pete led the way but Jasper choose to ignore him and went for the muddy channel and was stuck solid in the mud.  He managed to wriggle out minus his shoe……which was now not visible.  A laughing hopping Jasper was not going to retrieve this so help was needed to fish around and dig it out (was this going to be a jungle trial in ‘I’m a Celebrity’).

Pete found more flowing single tracks after requests for more riding and these trails had some areas of roots and logs to get over.  We arrived back at the meeting point just after 3pm.  Everyone appeared to enjoy the ride.  Thanks to Graham and Pete for coming along.

Hope to see you all back next year at the Youth Academy.  The Academy is open to all riders aged 8 to 16 years.

Just a final thanks to those that have helped out through the year and a huge thanks to all the parents who have supported the academy and the go ride racing.  A big thank you to the coaches who turn up each week to run the sessions and Toby who works well unseen to a lot of people coordinating the rota and making sure the riders and coaches know what is going on where each week.
