Glentress (black and) blue

Had a good time with the family at Glentress this week, kids with colds notwithstanding. (So we got to ride less than we would have.) Spooky Woods was partly closed off and previous heavy rain had made some of it a real slider session up near the top. My wipeout of the week, though, was on the blue route. The bl***y blue route! Yell

Me and middle son Matt decided how fast we could get down from the top car park to the bottom on the one time we did the blue. He led. I tried to stay in contact. Dunno how fast we were going. Over 30mph on on the straighter sections of singletrack, I guess, maybe faster still (35?), as it's so smooth. I got a bit of rear wheel lift on a little humpback in the trail (whose pitch was steeper than I expected, at that speed), failed to control it, rode along on my front wheel briefly, then faceplanted, writing off another bike helmet and ragdolling down the trail.

Serves myself right. Pride comes before a fall and we were just hammering along with caution thrown to the wind. I don't know why teenagers can get away with that and blokes in their 40s can't. Nowt broken luckily, apart from helmet and riding glasses - just bruises (all over the place) and a stiff neck. My right leg doesn't seem to have filled up with blood like Hackness Mike's and my reinforced collarbone held this time.

Good trip, though. If we never fell off occasionally, we wouldn't know where the edge was, would we?

Glad you had fun. I love the blue route up there. You're right though, it rides so well that you can be tempted to let go a bit! Came back from there last time promising to setup a permanent camp outside some offices somewhere to demand the same for Dalby! Just wasn't sure where would be the right offices :) Really made me realise that we're missing that intermediate level around here. You have to go from riding the logging roads straight to the Red. Which is a bit of a challenge to complete first time round if you're just used to riding on a flat 15ft wide road prior to that.

Clearly your technique from now on should be to put your military spec collar bone between you and all future obstacles. Have you considered having an airbag fitted the next time your collar-bone is in for an oil change or whatever?

If you need new glasses - and can live with the ridicule of wearing goggles… check out the latest from reconinstruments.com. Saw it advertised in this month's BM-UK. Almost tempted me to take up snowboarding again…. but the ratio of ride to hospital time was wrong last time I tried it.

Yeah, there's definitely a gap for a decent blue route locally, Matt. Something you can get a bit of speed up on…

Reinforced collarbones are clearly the way to go, though it feels like the shock that would've gone through that was absorbed by my neck and shoulder instead. Maybe we need inflatable protectors like this. And all-over Wolverine-style bone grafts too.

Those GPS goggles look cool. I'd only break 'em, though. Frown

Hmm… watched the video. Saab drivers eh? You'd think he would have got the message after the 3rd impact and ride a bit faster. Wink
