I'm off to Glentress with the family at half term. Never been before. What are the different trails like, in terms of: how tiring; how technical? Most of the time I'll be riding with one or both of my teenage sons, one of whom is  a 'red route' level rider, the other of whom is a 'blue route' level rider. (He'll do bits of red routes, but nothing too technical.) Neither of them will want their legs ripped off on all day epics, either.

Also, any suggestions on curry houses etc. gratefully received.

cheers

Just back from Glentress. For anyone who hasn't been there, there's a good mix of trails for different abilities. My middle son, Matthew (15) really enjoyed the Red route, particularly the descents through Spooky Wood, Super G, the Pie Run and Mushroom Pie. You descend for a long time, as the route is sort of 'up the hill and back down again', which means there's also a lot of climbing in the first half of the ride. He struggled a bit with this on the first day, and thereafter we started from the Buzzards' Nest car park (which is higher up the hill) to cut down on the climbing.

My youngest son, William (13) really liked the Blue route, which has lots of flowing but not technical singletrack. We spliced bits of routes together using their favourite sections. Shame that Ewok Village was dismantled - Matthew and me visited that but it was gone. I was going to have a blast around the Black route there or at nearby Innerleithin, but spent my time shepherding the boys around instead. It wasn't a hardship. It was nice to see them getting more confident on the trails, and Matthew descends at a similar speed to me anyway.

No serious accidents. Just a few scuffs from falls. For anyone with teenagers, I'd recommend it. We stayed in a little village called Cardrona a few miles from Peebles. There's plenty of walking trails at and near Glentress if you've got non-mountain biking family members. Plus there's stuff like horse riding and fishing available if that's your thing. The Prince of India restaurant in Peebles does good food.

Because I was busy sorting the boys and their gear out, I kept forgetting to take the camera. So I didn't get any photos… Frown

A club trip up there sounds like a good idea some time.

Nah, it's already got over-biked, paunchy Bank Holiday mountain bikers slowly pushing their bikes uphill to do that. Wink

Everyone was cheerfully getting on with each other, as far as I could see. Even if, like me, they were wearing retro roadie jerseys and a peakless helmet…
