There has been a number of enquries through the club about a mountain bike skills day.  I have made contact with a company in Scarborough called Chasing Trails who run MTB holidays and skill courses.

The owner is willing to sort something out for the club and I am hoping with enough riders this will be at a good reduction.

What I need to know from the members is:

1. Would you attend a skills day?

2. What sort of skills would you like to improve on?

3. Would you be willing to pay for this course?

In addtion Steve (the owner) has asked for you all to log onto this website and enter a free competition to win a weekend trip to 7 Stanes:

I'm up for that.

I'd attend a skills day cause I really need to get my confidence back after falling off all the time. And I'd like to get jumping and flying dailled in. As for paying for a day,if its not silly money then yeah I'd still be up for it.

Can you get some idea of price?

Been onto the website and its says something about the weekend away been on the first weekend of September………..which could be fun seen as Mrs Ginger thing is expected to drop our first around that time.Surprised

I bumped into Steve from Chasing Trails several weeks ago, when I came out of a shop and he was checking out my Inbred town bike. Seems like a nice guy and he knows his bikes.

When I got two of my teenage sons trained prior to our Glentress trip in May, however, I used Mike at Big Bear Active - http://www.bigbearactive.co.uk. I didn't know Mike from Adam but I do know Ian Warby, who developed the CTC mountain bike instructor program that Mike uses. And (even without my CTC hat on), I have to say it was very good. Both the boys (who are at different levels) got a lot out of it, and it really made a difference on our holiday.

They were doing beginner/intermediate stuff. I'm considering doing the advanced course when my shoulder's better.

I'd be interested in this, for me and my son, he's 14 and not done MTB in any big way, just roughing around with his mates.  I need to learn some skills, like roots, balance, jumps, drop-offs, and the rest, I'm what you would call, “all the gear, no idea” type of rider.

beginner to intermediate for my son, and a bit more challenging for me please.

Im not around in July, so mid august onwards would be good.

Well I'd definately be up for it- again if reasonably priced.

Probably not interested until October tho'.  I need basic confidence, also an all the gear not much of an idea and even less confidence… especailly as I am confined to the Green for the moment, although I have been given permission to do unsupervised woo de woops on the red!Wink

Ok you wanted a booking so I have booked it.

Steve will run an intermediate day at Dalby 10am until 4pm on Sun 11th Oct. Start from Dixons Hollow.

Cost is £40 Per person which is cheap!

Max 8 riders so get your name and money to me soonest.

He is coming to our club meeting on 3rd Aug to give a bit of a presentation about his company Chasing Trails. So you can ask questions then.

Cheers Mark

That sounds good although - even though I'll be riding then - I'll give this one a miss. Based on a course I've done before, I think am intermediate now and would get more out of an advanced course. But that's no problem. If this one goes well and enough of us subsequently want to do an advanced one, we can book that later.

£40 is pretty much par for the course for this kind of thing. I paid £45 each for my boys when they did theirs. That was for the best part of a day's instruction, which was one-to-two. And it's a much better investment in your biking than spending £40 on some shiny widget for your bike, unless your name's Steve Peat or Oli Beckinsale.

The course is aimed at intermediate riders already and will cover manuals and jumps etc. So should be ok for you Dan!

I couldn't make the October date (and am not even intermediate yet!) but would be interested in any courses sometime for beginners.

I've almost mastered getting onto the bike, and have some imaginative ways of getting back off but most of those require parachuting equipment to perform safely.

Count me in if there are any more places on the course!  Smile

What's the best way to get the £40 to you?

I went on the skills course on Sunday and had a really good time. Picked up a load of hints and tips and general riding skills that are really usefull in everyday riding.

The course was well put together and even though there was a massive difference in everyones riding abilities, the course was tailored for everyone to get something out of it.A good tutor and a relaxed way of riding/learning that I would attend another course again.

It may seem daft to say, but its good to have a fresh way of doing things and someone who knows how to ride watching you and commenting on position and execution of various parts of your riding and then offering advice on how to do it better/faster.

All may be surprised to hear that I didn't need any help with wheeling though. Or jumping.

Good course and worth doing even if you are a god on a mountain bike. Everyday is a school day.

Glad it went well. Anyone get any pictures for the Gallery?

I think we should have a course that focuses on Not Crashing next. Wink
