Well the social group met at the Rosette. It was a large group, myself, Houghing Jax, Matt the camera, Lorainne, (After Matt's nickname) Ravenscar Chris, Garth,The baked bean family, lucy, who was out on her last ride for a while, Matthew, Mr and Mrs Smith, (not a catchy nickname, so am working on it!) Siobahn, Buttons, young un Nick, Big Nick, Dave, and….. brendon, phew remembered them all!!!

We set off from the Rosette through Scalby and up past Brian Thompson's. A quick stop for a team photo and on we went. Through Harwood Dale and over the road to pick up some wonderful single track to the Mast at Ravenscar. We all tested our balance skills and some failed! No names mentioned! Tho some should know better by now!Wink Next we picked up a section that was shown to us by local lad, Ravenscar Chris. A really fun downhill, narrow and steep. By now  some lights were on so it was great to see the stream of lights down the hill side. Tho those that were first down were not really looking at the lights, i asked them to move along but no they wanted to stay put,

'so we can see when they fall off' ……….Nice riding with friends eh?!

At this point i told everyone who had them to turn on their lights. Some one had forgotten to charge their battery, i ask you!! Daft thing to do! Ok it was me! I sorted everyone out with a moving, sorry light buddy and we were off.A fab piece of edgy single track and then over a field to some farm track and very minor roads downhill. Time was getting on and it was full on dark. A quick blast on the track and we would be home, well we would have been but for Matthew getting severe chain suck. Took a good 10 mins to free. We caught up the rest on the railway line but we found another broken bike, a snapped chain. I did my bossy bit and took over. Lucy had lost her gold link so i demanded another one, snapped orders left right and centre and a few mins later we were off. Well by now we were down to 7 as most had carried on , Jax and Matt gave us light to Burniston and then we were 5. Big Nick took over lighting up the way. Wonderful new lights he had. Hint hint!!!! I left at Scalby and they were 4. Dave and Lorainne would have pulled off at the Rosette and hopefully Big Nick and Lucy would have carried on and got home safely!

The fast group met at Sawdon, hope they had a good ride???

Seven antisocials met at Sawdon: Nigel the skills, Russ the pliers, Big Keith, Hackness Mike, Rich Waller, young Alistair, and me. Bit of a nip in the air, so none of us were sure what gear to wear. I left the jacket in the car. I figured I could warm myself up on the heat coming off Russ's head if it got cold! (Don't ask.)

Nigel was the leader. His plan was basically to kill me for turning up on a singlespeed. (With knackered bottom bracket bearings: loose and wobbly or tight and binding…)

We went up the road and joined Jed's trail, then headed over to do the Pace downhill. Shadowy under the trees, so tricker than usual. We had a monster climb after that. The first of many! Think we were climbing the ridge that runs between Troutsdale and Langdale. Then we went down. And up again. Then down. And up again. Mike even need the granny ring once.

I left the GPS at home so can't tell you exactly where we went. But I recognised the climbs. The last was that scrabbly one with the bench part way up, which takes you into Dalby. Most cleaned it. Me and Rich decided we needed to stretch our legs a bit instead.

We did a bit of the red route, then did the rooty wall of death (ridge of death?) on the old black route. From there, it was an easy spin back to the Anvil. Or it should have been. That bit of singletrack between the pig track and the road was all churned up from motorbikes, with deep, deep ruts. And the farmer had dug out the ditch just before the road. Me and Rich knew this, as did Alistair, but we weren't at the front: Nigel and Mike were. Both caught their front wheels in the ditch and went flying. Nigel picked up a nasty cut above his eye. (He blamed Rich's 'cursed' Ibis!) Luckily, when we got to the Anvil, Mayor of Sawdon Nick was there and he had some steri-strips at home. Bit of first aid. Some beer. Job done!

Another good ride. But I think I need a new bottom bracket. And some gears…
