Nutcracker XC at Camp Hill

While other club members had just finished riding 24 hours of Mountain Mayhem, I was at Camp Hill near Bedale - as was Ruth Thompson (Mike wasn't racing as he was ill), getting ready to ride a much shorter XC event. Camp Hill is a fairly flat course and not especially technical. Last year (for the second event there) it was fast. Video here.

This year the recent rain had made it very, very slippy. It wasn't as wet and dirty as the first Broxa Challenge, but the mud was claggier and slippier. After a recce, I switched my front tyre for a Nobby Nic and let lot of air out of both, hoping to get some grip. Still slid off a few times.

Ruth and I finished one after another. I'd been passed by the winner of the Masters' race but not the Veterans' race, so wasn't sure whether I'd have to finish after my third lap or carry on for four. 'It's up to you,' I was told. 'You can do another lap if you want.'

While it was nice NOT to get lapped by the leader of the Vets for once, I was pretty burned out and decided to stop. I'm glad I went, but it was hard going, and on the back of a couple of busy days (travelling to Edinburgh and back on Friday, and Manchester and Lancaster and back yesterday) I was tired at the start. Time to take it easy for a couple of days, I reckon.

Here's  my Garmin plot of the ride.

Rob Powell of Malton Wheelers was also racing (he did better than me in Vets), as were Dave Leaming and Big Tom, also of Malton Wheelers (racing Masters).

Right: better go and hose down my bike kit before putting it in the washing machine!

Results not in yet, Mark. Didn't see Sam so didn't know he was racing.

Hey Dan, its “Long Tom” please! Cool

Im hoping he did pretty well. He's been training hard for this one.

Damn good Engineering Draughtsman, air cooled VW lover and Karmann Ghia owner.

Well done Tom.  This series has grown in popularity since last year and the field getting bigger.   Shame the race clashed with Mountain Mayhem!!

Good photos!

If you click on 'by category', Tom came 5th in the masters category this time. A bit like cross, several races take place at once.

So I was both 44th (out of 72 in the race) and 19th (out of 32 vets). Pretty much the same as usual. Confused
