Well in honour of Hackness' Mike's birthday we met at a new venue, The Bryherstones. being the great leader that i am i delegated the lead to Russ the Pliers, fast, and Ravenscar Chris, social. As it was Mike's birthday he got to stay in the pub with little hopper and family to keep him company. We were joined again tonight by Corinne Dennis of C.D. clothing, so us girls, Siobahn and myself , flashed off our C.D tights! Father Ted was on good form, being cheerfully rude to one and all ! We headed down to the railway line at Heyburn Wyke, up towards Ravenscar but then picked up some wonderful tracks, don't ask me where i wasn't leading and was paying no attention. At one point we got chatting to a very nice couple who have a railway in their garden, so they invited us in to see it and very impressive it is too! Open gardens at Ravenscar on Sat for those that want to check it out, they are doing food too! The fun had to end and we picked up some rather rutted singletrack which was still dry enough to be able to pick a good line, Corinne out for her first ride on her new bike wasn't convinced but did pretty well. from there it was over a field then a wonderful loop of sweet singletrack and then more singletrack to the mast. Siobahn didn't like the climbing bit, the narrow track, the routes, the stones, the puddles, pretty much all of the last bit, but we had enjoyed it so we all ignored her! Then came a bit she really didn't like. It was a downhill in well i can only describe it as a very deep rut, the top edges were above our heads and we couldn't see the track due to the undergrowth! great fun. We left the rut but continued downhill through 2 foot high bracken, the best bit was listening to Siobahn and Corinne scream, crash then disappear! Great fun! The view was simply to die for. Then the ride got even better. We went to the heyburn wyke from ravenscar on sweet tracks that i have never ridden on before, at one point The Tedman rode towards the edge of the cliff pretending to leave his braking until the last minute, very convincing he was too. i expected to have to call the coast guard! A quick blast back to the pub on the railway line, tho not before a near miss of being savaged by the hound of the wyke, well it was only 6 inches high but i thought Tedman was a gonna! I told it to sit in a very firm voice and it behaved beautifully and went home! Great ride and def a place to meet again. They do amazing puddings too!

I thought that might have been Corinne of clothing fame. I don't think we've actually met, although I've edited reviews of her clothing before now.
Russ the pliers led six other riders up the old railway track towards Ravenscar: Nigel the skills (recovered after his over the bars helmet-buster a couple of weeks ago), No longer Langdale Richard, Lewis, me, a couple of fellers I haven't met before. (I didn't catch your names - sorry!) The forecast said it was going to tip it down so I had a showerproof jacket, a winter jersey, waterproof socks and a cap to put under my bike helmet to keep the expected rain out of my eyes. In fact it was a nice night - although I did need the waterproof socks!
We peeled off before Ravenscar and took bridleways, a deeply troughed green lane, and tarmac to the Whitby road. We crossed that and had a blast in Harwood Dale forest. Some great tracks that I haven't ridden before. Lots of mud and some really deep smelly puddles, due to the recent rain.
There were a couple of technical descents that only Russ, Nigel and Lewis were really comfortable with, but plenty of slidey singletrack too.
Russ led us to, I think, Cloughton Woods after that. The singletrack there had been chainsawed over with branches here and there, to stop motorbikes, so a bit of carrying there. Lewis picked up a stick and bust his rear mech. I pulled my back wheel over and had to sort that. (Payment for not having been out for a bit and not having kept my bike tip top.) Nigel also end up with a loose back wheel.
At one point we had to cross a field full of young bulls. 'They're just curious,' said Nigel. The rest of us watched Russ set off across the field before we followed. The cows were excited, running around a big pack. No one was trampled, though, and we got out of the field okay.
Some great new trails (for me). Some great views too - pity no one had a camera to get that shot over the barley fields towards Scarborough castle, and that view of sunlight filtered through the pine trees. Thanks to Russ for leading. Don't know how far we went as I left my Garmin at home by accident.

Ive been thinking…
I will soon need to do some Cyclo Cross training for the three peaks in a month or so. Are these rides “good” for a cross machine? I dont want technical or drop offs 'n' stuff you know. Just want to get some quality miles in on the cross bike. Riding on grass and well used bridleways are a goer for me.

Well, there would be bits you would have to walk (or run, with bike on shoulder?) with a cross bike. But then there are occasionally bits I have to walk with a mountain bike. Your cross bike wouldn't break. But it'd be challenging, I'd have thought. There aren't big slabs or dropoffs, but you'd find some sections tough. Be good for your bike handling, mind.
