On Saturday 14th Nov I will be leading a road ride which will go from Scarborough to Ruswarp, Grosmont, Egton, Glaisdale, Rosedale Abbey, Hutton Le Hole, Marton, Kiirby Misperton and back through Snainton.

This will be 80 miles with 1800 metres of ascent.  So it will be steady but with some classic climbs - Hackness windings, and Rosedale Chimney.

There will be cafe stops!

Let me know if you are coming along. Depart from Crossgates, Scarborough @ 9am sharp!

Chimney Bank is 27% at it's maximum, the road sign says 1 in 3 (33%) but it's not that steep and this is only for about 200m in the middle of the climb.

The overall climb is 1550yds and is 1 in 8.2 on average. Wink

Reasty Bank as an example to that is 1.1mile and 1 in 15, so the Chimney is twice as hard. Surprised

The Milk race went up there once and half the field got off.

Not Paul Sherwen though he got to the top 'cos he told everyone on the TdeF once. Someone e-mailed and asked the question 'what's the hardest climb you've ever done???' This was when the TdeF was in the Alp's, so the answer was thought to be Alpe d'Huex etc. but no he said it was in fact 'ROSEDALE CHIMNEY'. Surprised Fame at last for us northerner's. I put the info higher up this page. Wink

1550yds long which is just under a mile. The average is 1 in 8.2 overall but it is super steep in the middle only for 200yds ish. So set off nice and slow at first or you will blow up on the hairpins, once round these it starts to flatten off bit by bit.

Hope this helps. Smile

This ride is only a week away…..!  Make sure that you are well rested before this one.

You will also have seen that we have an easy ride on 14th Nov as well…..so dont get confused - The Day of The Moors is a hard ride for this day.

Our ride will leave from crossgates bus shelter (near to the end of crab lane) in Scarborough at 9am.  The easy ride is at 10am from the Rosette pub on Scalby road.

All riders on the 'Day of The Moors' must have:

spare inner tube - if we all bring one we should have enough between us.

tyre levers

some money for cafe stops.

Energy bars

x2 - 750ml bottles with around 5-6% carbo powder mixed with water

solid food - energy bars or banana, dates etc..

waterproof jacket.  - it maybe cold across those moors and lets hope the weather stays fine!

Wont need mudguards, as Gary would say dont race on them dont train on them.

Mike, that makes no sense. Wink

Mudguards keep your bum dry. And when you're training, the extra weight and aerodynamic losses don't matter. If anything, they help - you're getting a little bit of extra resistance training on your ride. Laugh  Similarly, you're better off with training tyres on training rides. I race on Conti Supersonics, which are about as thick as fag paper. It would be bonkers to train on them - they'd just puncture more often and wear out quicker. I wouldn't wear my aero helmet either. Or my skinsuit. Or even be out on my race bike at all…

Have a good ride anyway, though. If the roads are wet, don't say I didn't warn you. Wink

Matthew

The route is up on the web for you to see.  We head North through Forge Valley…so we could see you at Ayton if you wait in the big garage with the Spa shop after Walkers restaurant that will save you a few miles and time.  We will probably be in Ayton for around 9.10- 9.15am?

Hope you can make it.

Update on the weather  - cloudy, dry but I expect the roads will be damp from overnight rain and showers expected from 3pm.

Might be able to get out on the good bike!

IMPORTANT

I have just seen the updated weather forecast for tomorrow.  The report is for 39mph winds gusting to 47mph.

Therefore this ride will be postponed to a later date.

Sorry but it would not be safe to ride over the moors with such a forecast.
