Finally plucked up the emotional strength to post some news on my recovery.
Why is recovery so much more painful than the actual accident?
My recovery is going as planned and even after 5 weeks today, the physio has commented that I am well advanced considering the seriousness of the break.
Exercises are going well, stairs - no problem. Stamina needs attention, but that will improve in time. After a couple of near misses I am able to get around the house using one crutch now
. Venturing outside I still use both crutches - you never know.
I have been permitted to take up pole dancing
Hell its hard lifting my right leg up…..but must be carefull not to slide down the crutches and bang my head just before I hit the floor. I wonder if I will be able to have a better handicap, with all that extra weight I am carrying
.
After 40 plus years in the saddle and experiencing a serious crash, that wearing the correct gear saved me from much serious injuries. My sport glasses save my right eyeball. A hole had been ground through the lens. My helmet saved my right eye socket from taking extensive cuts as I was sliding face down along the road. The helmet was destroyed during the impact.
Over the years I assessed each ride as to what gear I would put on, sometimes a helmet, sometimes not. That philosophy is one that I will no longer apply and ride with a helmet on every ride in future. I'm not preaching to anybody here, but caveat emptor.
Please be safe out there.
If you are out on your Sat/Sun ride and want a cup of tea or coffee, then my house is always open to you.
Heartfelt thanks go out to everybody. I can't begin to express my appreciation to the people that have called in to see me in hospital and at home. To the wonderful people who assisted and kept me calm throughout. The paramedics from Scarborough who were quickly on the scene, and to the crew of the Air ambulance who medivac'd me to James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough. (Not much to remember there as I was knocked out with Ketamin). Everybody was wonderful. My emotions get the better of me sometimes….like now. God bless you all.
