Hi Mike

Yes I think that is not a bad idea however who is going to arrange and organise these?  As you can see from last week it takes a lot of helpers and someone to co ordinate each time trial.

Also will we not be duplicating scarborough paragon events? and thus duplicating the work .

What would our events provide different to their events?

You are a member of paragon maybe you could suggest to their committee that we could co ordinate and share the work intead of doing extra events?  ie we run one one week then paragon the other?

We run ours on a Tuesday-Malton Wednesday-RCC Thursday. Sorted.Wink

Then people on shift etc. (like yourself) or with odd things on during the week finishing work late etc, or bad weather cancelling events there will always be at least 1 to go at. Smile

Team Mirage in Hull never did there own Time Trials and other clubs got annoyed.  As the club never needed marshalls it was left to other clubs

I think we will have to see how many people in the club want a full series of time trials and who comes forward to co ordinate and make it happen.

The marshals and volunteers thing is key. Scarborough Paragon have a small pool of retired racers who do a LOT of timekeeping, with others chipping in, while Malton Wheelers have the same couple of dedicated timekeepers each week, as far as I know. We don't have either of these advantages, so it's about having those of us who want to take part in the time trials doing the vounteering too.

Let's say we did a series of 10 time trials and for the sake of argument that we needed 3 volunteers at each one and that we had 15 RCC members taking part in each. That would mean we'd have 30 volunteer posts to fill (3×10). If we drew those volunteers from those wanting to ride, each rider would have to volunteer twice (30 divided by 15) and so race in 8 out of 10 races and help out in the other 2to make it fair. If we only had 10 RCC riders wanting to take part, each racer would have to volunteer three times (and so race 7 out of 10 races) to keep the workload fairly distributed.

The maths in that isn't quite right and we don't yet know how many potential TTers we've got in the club. But you can see my point. When I was in Clifton CC, the event organisers often had to phone round and press gang volunteers…

I'm quite happy to volunteer at the moment, because I can't race. But ordinarily, I'd want to spend SOME of my time racing as well.

Don't forget too that Thursday is traditionally one of the mountain biking rides. So it's a double whammy (and chapeau for their efforts) for a non-TTing mountain biker to volunteer to help out with the TTs.

In short, I think there is scope for some RCC time trials next season, but we need a show of hands or a poll to see who wants to race them. Because that's also our main pool of volunteers. After that, we also need to think of days. Would Sunday morning be a better option than Thursday evening?

Surely the club is at least as much about social, recreational riding as it is about riding to race? I'm not saying we shouldn't organise races as well - in fact, I'd support that - but:

1. It would make sense to offer events that complement those run by other clubs, such as Paragon and Malton Wheelers, and not compete with them. For instance, it'd be silly for us to do a time trial series on a Tuesday night.

2. We can only run run the events that we've got, or can get, volunteers for. (We'll definitely need a time keeper for the fourth event at Burton Fleming this month, because I won't be there. Form an orderly queue! Wink)

There probably are more mountain bikers in the club than road riders, but there are plenty of people like me, Mark and Andy who do all sorts of cycling. And I'd expect more riders to do or at least try both as the club goes on. In time, I think we should run off-road events too - a cyclo-cross event (or more than one), a cross-country mountain bike race, etc. But we can't do everything at once and we can't rely on the same small pool of volunteers for everything. Many hands make light work and all that.

For now, I think we should see how the Burton Fleming events go and take it from there. They should tell us what we need to know about how many people want to ride them and how many volunteers we're getting to run them. Assuming everything goes well, I look forward to us running more next season. September isn't too late to draw up a programme.

I might have this wrong, Mike, but I thought the cut off date for 'type B' events (i.e. normal club events) wasn't until 28th February? And even then, you can add events later with the local District's approval. So it's only an issue for open events. Not saying we shouldn't do opens, but maybe better to get any club events going sweetly before we run them?

I hope to be riding again in about 4 weeks. I'll see if the boys fancy a race next week.

Lets just see what the uptake is from these series of 4 time trials. The club is all about providing the right level of events activities for the members and providing events for all levels.  However as Dan points out to deliver this is down to the members to come forward and get things done.

At the moment the organising is being done by a few and the more people that can get involved the easier it is.   If we have a successful series of time trials and their is a willing person to co ordinate the events then I see no reason why we cannot have more next year.

I think the night to have them will be a decision for the club as Tuesday and Thursdays are mountain bike nights so it maybe Weds or Mondays is a more preferable night.

The committee are meeting on monday 7th Sept - to discuss 2010 and events but the committee can plan a full year of event sbut these will not happen without volunteers in particular volunteers to organise these events I will not be in a position to do so in 2010.

So if you fancy arranging any races or events then please post on here or contact the committee…..its not difficult and there are plenty of people in the club to give advice.

Any suggestions for events let the commitee know before monday.

I asked a few people about a time trial season at Richardsons but no one seem intrested.  I thought Richardsons might have something on offer, we get something on the forum a couple of days before a meeting asking what we want.

Mike I think that is inaccurate - Are you forgetting every members meeting when we have asked what members want?  Is this not requested at every opportunity including previously on this forum?

As for what is on offer please remember:

Did the club not run at peoples suggestion a velodrome trip, a family BBQ and a series of time trials (that you suggested).

What about the club runs on tues, weds, thurs, sat and sunday.   The coaching sessions delivered at Graham School, the first aid course and the mountain bike skills course to be held in Oct.

What about the work going on to set up a junior section, the application to run road races next year currently with Scarborough Borough Council?

All this in 7 months with a lot of members and committee who have never been in a club before I think is a tremendous effort. We are a new club with a diverse membership we are a cycle club not a road, time trial club but a club that wants to deliver a variety of activities.  To ensure this is right it takes time to come up with a suitable calendar.

The time trials series went well and we will be doing some more next year so why do you get the impression no one is interested?

Last night the commitee spent over two hours discussing issues including next years events calendar which will be in published in November.  Can we rely on your help again for these time trials or other events next year?

These were discussed:

Mountain Bike Race in Dalby

Sportive

Time Trial series early and late 2010 with some club events which would qualify for a Best all rounder

Road Races x4

Mountain Bike Time trials

Some social events

Family day

An events committee is due to meet at the end of Oct to bring in the precise dates for the calendar for 2010.

Jackie Hough the chair of the commitee is putting together the calendar and it will be released shortly.

However you willl be pleased to note that there are time trials from May until Sept with a best all rounder comp and handicap series. Four road races, MTB race, trip away to Scotland, Trip to Majorca, Youth section meeting weekly,  Start of the phasing in of club trophies.  The summer family BBQ and annual dinner and presentations.

I am sure I have missed something but I think you will agree there is plenty for 2010.
