In just a few weeks the Richardsons CC ‘KIng of Speed’ time trial series starts. This is a 9-event series with rides at 5, 10 and 25 miles. The objective is to record your highest average speed over these three distances - your best race at each distance will count. (NB. Under 18s are welcome to ride the 25 mile TTs but only their 5 and 10 mile distances will count for their competition.)
All races start at 7.15pm and will cost £2 per rider to enter. Any local time triallist can take part, and all RCC members are eligible for prizes and trophies. The events are registered with Cycling Time Trials and with the police. But we need one more thing for them to take place: volunteers!
I (Dan Joyce) will be sorting the signage, results, etc. But each event needs a minimum of two volunteers to take place - a timekeeper and a time keeper’s assistant. Three would be better, so that we’ve got a marshall for at least one junction and will be essential for the 5-mile events if we get more than about a dozen riders.
Volunteering just means means turning up on a Monday evening for an hour or two and wearing a bright yellow bib that says ‘marshall’. You’ll either be looking at a stopwatch, calling out rider numbers as they come in, or holding out one arm to direct riders. One volunteer at each race will hold up riders at the start (i.e. hold their bike as they wait stationary, feet clipped in). All of these jobs are very easy. What’s more, all of the events are LOCAL. You won’t need to travel more than five or six miles from the centre of Scarborough, so you could cycle out.
Volunteers will need to be there from about 6.45 (at the very latest) up until the race finishes - which will vary from around 7.45 or so for the 5-mile races up to about 8.30-8.45 for the 25s. If you’ve never done any kind of timekeeping or marshalling before, instruction will take about five minutes. As I say, it’s easy. But someone still has to do it.
I’ll be timekeeping at some of the events. But I’ll need help. Can you let me know if you, or anyone you know (e.g. family who would be happy to see you race), would be happy to help out on the dates below? If you can help, let me know all the dates you’re available to help. I’ll assume you want to help on just one occasion unless you specifically tell me you’re happy to help e.g. two or three times. I’ll draw up a list when I know what kind of volunteer pool we’ve got. You can email me or send me a private message via this website.
I’m hoping to be able to sort this using volunteers alone. If I can’t, I’ll make it a condition of entry that to qualify for the series you’ll need to volunteer (or bring a proxy volunteer) to help at at least one event.
These are the dates, with the race distances, course numbers (don’t worry about these) and details of roughly where we’ll meet. (More details nearer the time.)
10th May, 5 miles, V401 - meet nr. Morrisons
17th May, 10 miles, V417 - meet nr. Musham Bank roundabout
24th May, 25 miles, V430 - meet layby near Seamer on Ayton-Seamer road
7th June, 5 miles, V401 - meet nr. Morrisons
14th June, 10 miles, V417 - meet nr. Musham Bank roundabout
21st June, 25 miles, V430 - meet layby near Seamer on Ayton-Seamer road
28th June, 5 miles, V401 - meet nr. Morrisons
5th July, 10 miles, V417 - meet nr. Musham Bank roundabout
12th July, 25 miles, V430 - meet layby near Seamer on Ayton-Seamer road

I’ll be at all of them - hopefully racing some of them.

As well as prizes for category winners, I’m sourcing some kind of prize to raffle off among the volunteers.

Yes.

5 mile TT: from the bridge over the railway near the Morrisons roundabout out to Staxton roundabout and back.

10 mile TT: from Musham Bank roundabout to Staxton roundabout and back (plus a bit more not on the A64)

25 mile TT: between the roundabout where you turn off to Seamer and Musham Bank roundabout (plus a lot more not on the A64)

We will be riding on Monday evenings long after the rush hour so should have relatively light traffic conditions. And the A64 is wider than many roads use for time trials, so fine for being overtaken by traffic. The courses will be well signed for motorists too. Having said that, you have to be happy negotiating roundabouts to be comfortable doing this series.

I've put more information about the King of Speed series here. Course info, times, places to meet, details of the different competitions taking place.

I did it a bit late on a Sunday evening, so let me know if there are any stupid errors.

I haven't put up the big Excel spreadsheet with all the race info yet because there aren't any results yet. But it's prepped and ready.

One thing I'm still short of is volunteers. Cry Can you give up 90 minutes of your time on one Monday evening? It'd be much appreciated. The first event is sorted and I've had some offers for events beyond that, but I've still got two thirds of the events to sort out!

cheers

I will do the first one, as its on my birthday.  Lewis is coming to watch as its a bit dodgy on the A64 after the small roundabout.  So he said he would marshall if needed.

See you there then Mike just our view on the A64 this course will be no different to other routes such as the Pickering to Malton Road.  There will be plenty of signs out as well which are about 4 foot high so motorists will expect riders.

You will find that most accidents occur near road junctions and in towns.  The clubs view is that a straight road such as the A64 presents no more risks than other courses.

ROSPA stats:

90% occur in urban areas

75% happen at, or near, a road junction

80% occur in daylight

80% of cyclist casualties are male

About one third of the cyclists killed or injured are children

Around three quarters of cyclists killed have major head injuries.

Mike - thanks for the offer of Lewis marshalling. This is actually the one race so far where I've got enough helpers - though I'm still trying to get helpers for other events! But I'll be bringing my camera along and it would be great if Lewis could get some shots of the start and finish for the Evening News and the website. Can't pay him, of course, but he'd get a photo credit Smile. On here anyway. I can't guarantee it in the newspaper. Frown

I'd agree with Mark about the course, of course. That's why I chose it. Statistically, T-junctions and driveways onto a road are the danger areas. I don't want to emphasise the risk element, though. Cycling is actually very safe. Per hour spent doing it, you're about as likely to be injured or killed playing golf as you are riding a bike on road, and there are more head injuries to pedestrians and car drivers than to cyclists. (And any government serious about reducing head injuries ought to make alcoholics live in bungalows!)

Anyway, be good to see you there. Don't forget that any member of Richardsons CC while the series is on is eligible for any trophy. It doesn't matter whether you're first or second claim. If you're in the club, you're in the club. Laugh
