Well done to all the riders in the Summer Series. Some good rides, and more importantly a good atmosphere too. We had 19 riders at every event except the first one (which had 13), thanks to a sprinkling of riders from other clubs like Malton Wheelers, NYP Tri and Paragon and quite a few Richardsons CC riders doing their first ever time trial - or their first for a long while. Considering this is the first set of races we've organised and considering this isn't a fast course (which would attract died in the wool TTers), I think that's really encouraging.
Some things I'd take away from this series:
- Quiet roads and a good venue encourage newcomers, even if the course isn't a fast one.
- Having it as a series is a good incentive to do a set of races rather than just one or two (though we could perhaps improve on that by having points for each race and/or having the best 3 of 4 rides counting or something).
- An HQ (with cakes!) makes the races more of a social occasion.
- The signs and boards etc. have proved their worth already.
- We're depending a bit too much on the work of a smallish number of people. It's not a case of whether 'the club' will do this or that, but whether we will, individually.
A lot of the success is down to the work done by Mark and Hazel in particular. They'd be there from 5 o'clock until 9 o'clock at the hall sorting everything out and packing it away again, and were still typing up the results long into the night after that. And we had several volunteers who helped out again and again with marshalling, giving up their free time.
That's the key to the success of these events: people giving up time to help run them. If we're going to expand on this series next year, or run two series of events or whatever, we will need more volunteers. Possibly we could make it a condition of entry for a series (or for consideration of prizes in said series) that you offer to marshall or help in some other way in ONE of the races. That would spread the load a bit.
But anyway: thanks to everyone who helped out and who rode. A promising start.
Edit: Shame that none of the three press reports I've sent off so far have seen print, but I've just sent in a round-up of all four events and I'm hopeful that that will appear. It could be that we were getting less space for the last two weeks or so due to the prominent coverage (two full pages) we had after the launch.
