Lovely warm summer night tonight, albeit with a bit more breeze from the east than we were expecting. Maybe 10mph and dropping? A good night, in any event.

We had 15 riders. Everyone was looking to save some seconds here and there, and some had taken steps. Rich Simms borrowed an aero helmet from Carl and was sipping from some (ahem) ‘Lucozade’. Dave Myers and Steve Samples had new RCC jerseys. Stu was still waiting for tri-bars, so had to do without. Paragon’s Andy McLellan had had an aero makeover, bike and kit. Malton’s Colin Baldwin also turned up in skinsuit, pointy hat and disc-wheeled TT bike. Dave Schubert had a wobbly spin on Ian Squires’ recumbent, but although that might have been faster they’re sadly not allowed. (It was voted on at the last Cycling Time Trials AGM.)

I was holding the watch today, so can only comment on last few hundred yards of the race. Dave Schubert was first back, then riders started to arrive thick and fast. Rich Simms had caught his minuteman, Stu, and they arrived a couple of seconds apart after a sprint finish.

Treasurer Tim Watts came agonisingly close to going under 30 minutes, just four seconds off. Next time! Paragon’s Mike Potter is an old hand at testing and kicked hard enough to finish one second under 25 minutes rather than just over.

At the front, it was 1, 2, 3 for the TEF Richardsons riders. Solid riders from Matthew and Paul, though despite a good ride Carl was disappointed at the seconds he’d lost to them both.

I’ve had some queries as to how many events are left, whether we’d do more, and so on. There are five more RCC time trials (one at Malton/Pickering in two weeks, then four at Burton Fleming fortnightly thereafter). Plus maybe a hillclimb or two later in the season.

We’ve had a better turn out this year and I’d be happy to run more events next year. To make that happen, though, we would need more helpers – maybe an unwritten rule that everyone who races marshals once?

In the meantime, don’t forget that you can take part as a guest rider in other clubs’ events. Malton run theirs on Wednesday evenings, often on the same course we use, and Paragon on (normally) Tuesdays.

Many thanks to Ian Squires and Kevern Stafford for helping timekeep and marshal tonight.

The results:

1  23:13 Matthew Enticknap (TEFR/MW) Course PB?

2  23:40 Paul Hickman (TEFR/MW)

Yep. Course pb for me. Loved it actually, felt strong towards the end and rode the ride very well, increasing the hr to the max over the line.

Cheers Dan for taking time out of racing.

Matthew Enticknap is fastest overall, from Paul Hickman. You are fastest junior rider, at the moment Callum. Matthew Graves could overtake you if he rode the next event on the Pickering/Malton road. I've lost track of who the best improver is, as several riders have chopped large chunks off their time. I'll stick the results on a spreadsheet soon, which will tell me how it's going, though it may well go down to the last event.

Okay, I've got the results so far on a spreadsheet. Smile

Here's how it works for the 'faster rider' competition. Your fastest ride on each of the three courses - Snainton, Malton and Burton Fleming - gets counted. These three top rides are averaged out, giving you an average speed for your best three rides. Since we're only part way through the series, no one has ridden Burton Fleming yet and some haven't ridden Malton yet. That's why the leaderboard for 'fastest rider' doesn't list everyone.

Matthew Enticknap will be difficult to dislodge from top spot, unless someone else does an astonishingly good ride at Burton Fleming. Callum Norris is fastest Junior so far.

1 Matthew Enticknap 26.25

2 Paul Hickman 25.75

3 Carl Martin 25.33

4 Dan Joyce 24.17

5 Rich Simms 23.56

6 Dave Simpson 23.18

7 Jeff Francis 22.93

8 Stu Jackson 22.69

9 Paul Lane 22.38

10 Dave Schubert 20.78

11 Steve Samples 20.74

12 Pete Macauley 20.15

13 Tim Watts 19.69

14 Callum Norris (J) 18.69

15 Dave Myers 18.61

16 Simon Norris 18.59

Note that Rich Simms has a higher average speed from his best rides at Snainton and Malton than Dave Simpson, despite never beating him head to head. Rich got a good result at Snainton on Thursday and Dave wasn't there.

The 'best improver' competition is just an aggregation of the average speed gains (or losses) you make from ride to ride. It counts ALL your rides. Essentially, whoever keeps improving their time and getting faster will win this. Here's the top 10 so far.

1 Tim Watts

2 Dave Schubert

3 Dave Myers

4 Dave Simpson

5 Pete Macauley

6 Rich Simms

7 Paul Lane

8 Callum Norris (J)

9 Dan Joyce

10 Simon Norris

Thanks for doing all the working out Dan. Must be quite a comprehensive spreadsheet you have there.

I have done one for MW, to assign points and total the best eight rides. That took me ages cos I dont really design spreadsheets.

Again, Cheers for the hard work, it is appreciated.
