It was a ride of two halves down near Hull tonight, on the V718, with a stiff westerly breeze dying away to almost nothing later on. I rode out, with the wind behind, at 28mph average, but grovelled on the way back to finish with an average speed of just 25.55mph (and a time of 23 mins 29 secs). So my return must have been nearly 5mph slower.
I think Mark Grange did 21:51, Matthew Enticknap 21:25, and Paul Hickman somewhere between the two.
Quite when the wind eased I don't know. I'm telling myself I lost 20-30 seconds to it to make myself feel a bit better, but I can't know for sure.
Oh well: all you can do when your riding is off the pace is get some rest and then get back on the horse. (Horse being, um, the bike. Possibly on a turbo.)

Same deal for me Dan, super fast out and a nightmare back. Sometimes it's sheltered from the wind on the course but night it was plumb straight down the course, and offset against you to the tune of 4.1m with & 5.5m against.
I'm glad you found it as hard as I did but only so in the end we don't feel so bad about the time's we posted.
I thought the days of 21's were over for me as the last race was a westerly but I still did a 20:30 so well below 21.
You win some - you lose some. We lost. Others gained.

Aye, nothing to be done about it. Doesn't mean we can't have a moan, though. That's all part of the fun! It's the ride that got away, isn't it? You should have seen it. It was a beauty!
But I've got proof, yer honour. I decided to go compare with the Garmin Training Center software, checking speed and HR and stuff. No idea how anyone else's rides were affected - beyond the poplar trees at the HQ being bent over early on and not later - but I'm clinging to this as a way of 'taking the positives' from the ride.

It was - if the wind had dropped for me between half way out & the turn, I had 32.2mph average.
Coulda done an 18, honest. Thats my ride that got away.
Instead I blew up half way back, big style.
