I went to pump my tyres up at the HQ and discovered that the presta valve core on my rear wheel was knackered. There's a little tiny bit of rubber in there - like the washer on a tap - and it had perished. I had sealant with me and could have fixed a puncture, but without pliers or a spare valve core (or the spare tub I usually have with me ), I was stuffed. Went in a told them I was a DNS. Then went home.
I hadn't really thought about it before but you're probably more at risk of a failed valve on tubs as you're not changing innertubes (and hence valves) now and then like you are with clinchers. I'll carry a spare presta valve core in future.
Paulo and Matthew were there. Don't know how they got on as I didn't hang around.

Better still take a 2 spare wheels (front+rear) with you even if they are just old one's/training one's it's better than driving all that way to turn round and go back home.

Aye, I know it now. Matthew suggested I borrow a wheel at the time. (Not an easy option, since I ride fixed with a narrower OLN measurement.) 'I've got spare wheels,' I told him. 'They're just at home!' Oh well, the burnt hand teaches best. It's only the second mechanical I've had TTing (I broke a chain several years ago). Got complacent.
Sod's law says you get bike problems when you're feeling good too, never the other way around…

Sorry to hear your valve problem Dan, having seen you there, I was windering why you were a DNS.
Had a similar issue on the last Team Swift, rode the last mile + on a rapidly deflating rear tub, miracuously did not damage the rim, but was not about to give in. When I got it home turned out the valve was the problem
As a result I had both a full spare tub in the boot of the car, along with tub tape and spare presta valves.
