RCC Wykeham Wood XC race #1

What a great turn out for our first mountain bike XC race at Wykeham: 32 riders hammered around a newly created course through the woods. There was lots of rooty singletrack, and while there was nothing technical, the course did not forgive lapses in attention!

I’m afraid I’m too tired to provide a full run down of how the race went, but there were some great individaul rides – particularly by the younger riders like Reuben Allanson (who beat his dad), Megan Simpson (who wasn’t that far off doing the same) and Edward Hopper (who was probably the youngest rider in the race.)

I was nearly sick after the fireroad sprint at the start. According to Strava, I temporarily hit 24.4mph on the opening straight. That’s a cadence of about 185rpm on my eggbeater gear. No surprise that I couldn’t hold it and riders came streaming past me… After that, though, groups of riders started to form. You can see from the times where the battles were: Tom Atkinson v Steve Hopper, Chris Brown v me, Reuben Allanson v Paul Lane, Peter Hopper v Stuart Hopper, and more I’m sure.

We had a few brief spits and spots of rain, but it was largely dry and wasn’t too cool once we’d got going. There were no serious incidents, as far as I know, although there were plenty of crashes and encounters with trees.

Many thanks to everyone who helped out with this – particularly Ian Dowkes, Paul Marr, Angie Archer, Wrench Green Chris, and Steve Hopper, but also the marshals (I spotted Paul Thornton and Richard Brown Legs), photographers, and Bryden for sorting the coffee van.

Like I say, I’m too tired to analyse the race in detail now, but please do add your own comments in the forum.

Here are the results (hopefully formatted okay – if not, go to the News post and grab the PDF I’ve uploaded.) I think I’ve transcribed everything okay, but if you see any errors, let me know. I’ve not included club names as I only have the results sheet, not the sign on sheet. I’ve put approx lap times on here too. They’re not totally accurate as they include the first fireroad sprint, but give you a good idea of how fast everyone was lapping.
